New Jersey’s Libraries on the Chopping Block

Everyone in New Jersey knows the Governor has a tough job trying to get the state’s budget under control. He has done some things since in office I agree with and others I have not. I was appreciative that he spoke about the difference between the teacher’s union and teachers. I am not happy he hasn’t re-opened the Pequest Trout Hatchery and Education Center on weekends. The latest item on the chopping block however, goes too far; New Jersey’s public libraries.

The proposed state budget calls for a 74% cut in funding to our libraries. This would eliminate inter-library loan system, just about completely wipe out internet access (which many need right now due to the high rate of unemployment) and more. This would total about $10 million in cuts.

Since I was a child, I loved the library.  I always found solace in the bookstacks at the old Seton Hall library in college. I even considered becoming a librarian at one point. I can’t imagine these wonderful community resources not available to New Jersey’s residents.
